Critically acclaimed violinist Jennifer Koh to perform

The student-led Ethos New Music Society will bring Jennifer Koh, a world-famous violinist known for intense, commanding performances delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance, to the State University of New York at Fredonia for a concert on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Ms. Koh will perform selections from “Shared Madness,” her personal tribute to the intensity of the creative process between artist and performer. “Shared Madness” celebrates an amazing and generous community of artists and friends who came to Koh’s aid at a time of need.

Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year, top prize winner at Moscow’s International Tchaikovsky Competition, winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition and recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant are among honors received by Koh. She has recorded 12 albums, including the 2018 release “Saariaho,” with Chicago-based Cedille Records.

“Jennifer is one of the preeminent violinists in the world … not only because of her skill and artistry, but because of her thoughtful and open mindset about the music she plays,” said School of Music Associate Professor Rob Deemer.

“She’s just as comfortable playing masterworks from the past as she is performing music written today and that openness is something that I hope all of our music students take to heart as they pursue their studies here at Fredonia,” said Dr. Deemer, head of Composition and Ethos New Music Society advisor.

Koh is the founder and artistic director of arco collaborative, an artist driven nonprofit organization that supports artistic collaborations and commissions.

Leading orchestras around the world that Koh has performed with include: the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics; the Cleveland, Mariinsky Theatre, Minnesota, Philadelphia and Philharmonia (London) Orchestras; the Atlanta, Baltimore, BBC, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, Montreal, Nashville, National, New Jersey, New World, NHK (Tokyo), Pittsburgh, RAI National (Torino), St. Louis, Seattle and Singapore Symphony Orchestras and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Conductors Koh has worked with include: John Adams, Marin Alsop, James Conlon, Gustavo Dudamel, Christoph Eschenbach, Giancarlo Guerrero, Manfred Honeck, Louis Langree, Carlos Kalmar, Lorin Maazel, Sakari Oramo, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Juraj Valčuha, Osmo Vänskä, Alexander Vedernikov, and Edo de Waart.

Koh, who had her debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11, has a B.A. in English Literature from Oberlin College and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Ethos New Music Society is a student-funded, student-funded organization that is presenting 10 guest artists this year.
