Jennifer Koh and Reiko Uchida have crafted a perfect album of Schumann sonatas for a rainy Sunday afternoon
Schumann: The Sonatas for Violin and Piano
Jennifer Koh, violin; Reiko Uchida,
piano (2006)
In the wrong hands, Robert Schumann's three sonatas for violin and piano could seem a bit overdone: "tastefully" uber-Romantic. One can almost imagine the composer's wife, Clara, seated at the keyboard in an airless, overstuffed Victorian drawing room. Luckily, the duo of Jennifer Koh on violin and Reiko Uchida on piano has little time for mannerist excess. Koh in particular channels the overall minor-key mood, her playing fluid and forceful in equal measure. To this amateur fan of the classics, Koh and Uchida have made the perfect rainy-Sunday-afternoon soundtrack.
